This week on One on One, Riz Khan meets Bassam Abu Sharif.

He was called the "face of terror" by Time Magazine, as one of the most notorious and dangerous men in the 1960s and 70s.

Bassam Abu Sharif played a major role in the 1970 hijackings of four planes that led to the Black September in Jordan - with King Hussein expelling the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

Abu Sharif acted as "minster of propaganda" and recruited militants for the Palestinian fight against Israel.

In 1972, the Israelis tried to kill him with a bomb package mailed to him - leaving him half-blind, severely deaf, and almost fingerless.

He continued with the struggle to free his homeland, becoming the senior advisor and confidant to Yasser Arafat, the late PLO leader, and helping to put together the elements that would lead to the Oslo peace treaty between Israel and the PLO in 1993.

Bassam Abu Sharif's perspective on the long struggle of the Palestinian people - both violent and political - reveals an emotionally charged history that continues to shape the way the Middle East thinks today.
