This week on One on One, Riz Khan speaks with architect Daniel Libeskind on the inspiration for his works, including his design for the new development on the site of the 9/11 attacks in New York. 

The son of Holocaust survivors, the Polish-born American architect recounts the "dark time" of his childhood under Communist rule. 

A naturally gifted musician, he became a virtuoso accordion player and pianist, earning enough to support his family, but he does not regret turning his talents to architecture.

He has designed iconic structures around the world, including the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, England.

Libeskind says he designs buildings not as objects, but as a part of culture.
