When bullets fell like rain

Galima Buharbayeva is working to keep the memory of the massacre alive
How long does it take to forget a massacre?

On May 13, 2005 several hundred unarmed civilians were killed by government troops in Andijan, a town in Eastern Uzbekistan.

As the truth about the sheer scale of the killings began to emerge, governments around the world professed their dismay.

A mere three years later the Andijan massacre is all but forgotten. Since 2006 the EU has progressively weakened its sanctions.

President Karimov has become an ally in George Bush's 'war on terror' and the West is hungrily eying up Uzbek gas reserves.

Journalist Galima Buharbayeva, now in exile in Germany, has made it her mission to keep the memory of the Andijan massacre alive.
