Programmes RIZ KHAN
Native American rights

The fight for native American rights has taken many turns over the centuries.

On Thursday's Riz Khan we look at the battle from two very different angles.

First, a group of activists have set out on a 5,800km trek from San Francisco to Washington DC, promoting conservation, collecting rubbish, and raising awareness about their plight along the way.

The American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks discusses the "Longest Walk" movement and what they hope to achieve.

Later in the programme we examine a Lakota tribal effort to withdraw their ancestral lands from the United States.

The leader of the "Republic of Lakotah", the controversial actor and activist Russell Means, joins us to discuss his plans for establishing an independent, matriarchal and independent nation within the United States.

Native American
I think all this talk about the land of the United States belonging to so-called "native Americans" is racist. The fact of the matter is that I was born in the US, so I am just as Native as anyone else. Right to land is not genetic.

Native Americans
The very name is a misnomer these people were settled on this continent long before anyone thought of calling it America.Yes,Jay,yu are correct it is racist to refer to them in this manner but,it was even more racist to deprive them of their land, liberty and life back in the 19thC.And,to be born in a stable does not make one a horse,Think about it!

Right rights
Russel told something very interesting. The idea of Lacotah, a republic build and molded on the matriarcal way of life of native americans. No taxes. Only brotherhood. Fantastic. Maybe a dream, but this can be the beginning of a new way of relationship between native americans and the rest of americans, that are so much more.
