Turkey's 'judicial coup'

Polls indicate that most Turks are opposed to a ban on the AKP [AFP]
This week, Turkey's constitutional court is hearing arguments to ban the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which is accused of attempting to replace the country's strictly secular system with an Islamist government.

For eight decades Kemalism has been protected by the Turkish military, which regularly intervenes in the political affairs of the country.

But the AKP won an outright majority in parliament in 2002, and won 47 per cent of the vote in the last elections, in July 2007. Recent polls indicate that the majority of Turks are opposed to a ban on the ruling party.

On Tuesday, Riz speaks with a panel of Turkish experts about the debate over the role of Islam in this Muslim country.
