In 1978, Jimmy Carter helped to push the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
Since leaving the white house in 1981, Carter has remained active in international affairs as a free agent for diplomacy.
But he has been critised by some for meddling in the foreign policy agendas of US administrations.
He has met twice with leaders of Hamas and staunchly believes they must be included in the official dialogue toward a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.
