Christians in the Middle East

Watch part two

In the birthplace of Christianity, will the Christian population soon disappear?

Many studies report a slow but steady exodus of Christian communities from Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Egypt.

They cite various reasons for leaving: political and military turmoil, the search for better opportunities, and discrimination.

As Pope Benedict XVI makes his first trip to the Holy Land, seeking to mend relations with Jews and Muslims, and hoping to give support to Arab Christians, we will take a look at the conditions of Christians in the Middle East.

On Monday we will speak with Bernard Sabella, a Christian member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and former sociology professor at Bethlehem University; Nina Shea of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom; and Charles Sennott, the author of The Body and the Blood: The Middle East's Vanishing Christians and the Possibility for Peace.

This episode of the Riz Khan show aired on Monday, May 11, 2009.
