Thousands of people are being forced to leave their homes to escape the battles - creating a humanitarian crisis estimated to involve up to a million people.

Meanwhile, the piracy crisis off Somalia's coast is creating challenges on a different front - one involving the millions of dollars it is costing the international community in ransom money.

These are just some of the issues facing Sharif Ahmed, the Somali president.

Before he became president, Ahmed was the commander of the Islamic Courts Union, which rose up against the previous administration and its Ethiopian allies.
