| Rageh Omaar - Presenter |
|
Rageh Omaar presents Witness, a half-hour daily documentary series which features short, specially commissioned or acquired films gathered from independent film-makers.
Each documentary reveals the unknown lives of ordinary people, following their lives, telling their stories and portraying the challenges that confront them.
Our witnesses are people in a situation or those who have observed them first hand.
The films cover conflict, belief, the past and the future and as well as bringing new stories to light they showcase the talents of a new breed of multi-skilled, frontline journalist.
In the studio, Rageh will further explore the issues raised in the films, with expert guests on the subject matter and the film-makers themselves.
Coming up on Witness:
Being Osama Dir: Mahmoud Kaabour
 |
| Five Osamas |
What's in a name? Well if your name is Osama, you're Muslim and you live in the West - it can tell the whole story of western and Muslim fear, prejudice and misunderstanding in the post September 11th world. Five Canadians of different ages and backgrounds explain what it feels like "Being Osama" in our post September 11th world.
Looking Good Dir: Ruhi Hamid
 |
|
Rageh Omaar and Ruhi Hamid |
Think fashion and make up: think New York, London, Paris and …Kabul? It would be understandable if not Kabul, given Afghanistan's recent past. Under the Taliban, Afghani women had to endure severe restrictions on almost everything, facing real threats and possibly beating if they did not wear the full burqa in public.
With the Taliban gone, women are free to express themselves anyway they wish, but there's still a palpable air of unease on Kabul's streets. The anonymous blue veil remains a common sight - but underneath: anything goes. Ruhi Hamid shares the delights and secrets of filming in the slowly emerging world of female society in Afghanistan.
My Dear Olive Tree Dir: Osama Qashoo
 |
| Palestinian farmer Sharif Khalid with Rageh Omaar |
The Olive branch is a universal symbol of peace - but that hasn't stopped it becoming a victim of the Israeli - Palestinian conflict. In the West Bank and Gaza, the Israeli Army has uprooted nearly half a million trees - some of them dating back to Roman times.
What's not in doubt is the personal tragedy this leaves in its wake. Palestinian land owner Sharif Khalid travels over three days to get to the Witness studio to explain to Rageh Omaar why he chooses to sleep in his shed.
Another Road Home Dir: Danae Elon
 |
| Danae Elon | ‘Another Road Home’ is the simple and heart-rending story about a young Israeli woman's search for the man who helped bring her up as a baby. But because the man is Palestinian it becomes a drama of international proportions. Borders have to be negotiated, history re-interpreted, but most importantly, both sides have to sit down and talk. It's an intensely personal story that proves love can transcend even the most bitter, political conflicts. Danae Elon discusses making her film in the studio with Rageh Omaar and describes how it feels to be watching it again as an older, wiser woman.
