Young Freud in Gaza

Watch part two

Inas is a young woman living in Palestine's Gaza Strip. For much of her life she has been psychotic and close to suicide after seeing a school classmate killed in an Israeli attack.

In the desperate turmoil of Gaza there are many more like Inas with little hope of help.

Given all its other problems, Gaza is not the place you would expect to find mental health high on the priority list. But it is for a young man called Ayed.

He is a psychotherapist and runs a clinic for young people with mental health problems in Gaza. Without Ayed and his therapy, Inas feels she would surely have committed suicide.

When Ayed goes on his home visits, our camera follows him to the unrevealed secret rooms of Gaza; we film Ayed as he gives his therapy, and we listen to his patients; one of them is young Inas.

Another patient is Abed, who took part in a suicide mission, which failed. Abed was seriously injured, but is now back in Gaza. Ayed's therapy brings him some relief from the pain. There is also Maysa who lost her husband-to-be three days before their wedding.

Witness has gained intimate access to Ayed's work. In his consulting room, and on home visits Ayed's work takes us into the darker recesses of the human cost of conflicts.

Young Freud in Gaza is a unique and revealing insight into the minds of both the victims and the perpetraters.

Young Freud in Gaza can be seen on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 0830GMT and 1900GMT; and on Wednesday at 0330GMT, 1400GMT and 2330GMT.
