Sevilla advance to last 16

Sevilla advanced to the knockout stage of the Uefa Champions League despite surrendering a late goal to draw 1-1 against Stuttgart.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic equalised after gathering a pass from Pavel Pogrebnyak from the top of the area in the 79th minute before swerving a powerful shot into the top of goal.

Sevilla had mostly backed off after Jesus Navas had scored in the 14th minute at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Navas, who is hoping for a first call-up for Spain next week, charged into the area to meet Ndri Romaric's through pass and slot it under goalkeeper Jens Lehman.

Sevilla dropped its first points in Group G to stay top with 10 points, while Stuttgart has three. Unirea Urziceni drew 1-1 with Rangers to sit second with five points while the Scottish club has two points.

Holding a 1-0 lead, Sevilla allowed Stuttgart to create opportunities, with Arthur Boka forcing Javi Varas into a save at the near post in the 36th.

Varas couldn't reach Kuzmanovic's header in the 54th, but it came off the crossbar and the goalkeeper eventually gathered the rebound.

Lehman got down to hold Romaric's hard drive from far out in the 61st in one of Sevilla's better second-half chances.

Julian Schieber's acrobatic volley inside the area flew just wide in the 83rd to leave the Bundesliga side still waiting for its first win in the competition.

Rangers reeling after draw

In the group’s other match, a late goal from Marius Onofras gave Unirea Urziceni a 1-1 draw against Rangers on a water-logged pitch.

Lee McCulloch had given Rangers the lead with a left-foot shot from 20 metres in the 78th minute.

But the Romanian champions, who dominated possession in the second half, equalised in the 88th when Onofras fired home with his right foot from 20 metres.

"It was the best goal of my career. We deserved to win the match but this time, but we had a much more determined opponent,'' Onofras said.

Unirea is second in Group G with five points after four games, while Rangers is last on two.

Rangers lost 4-1 to Unirea at home but opened the match on the attack.

Kevin Thompson had the visitors' best chance in the first half, but his free kick from 30 meters in the 12th was pushed away by goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis.

Unirea best first-half chance came in the 35th minute when Sorin Frunza tried to lob the ball from 35 meters but sent it over the bar.

"I think we deserved to win. We had more chances. Their keeper was on incredibly good form today,'' said Unirea coach Dan Petrescu.

Unirea stepped up the pressure in the second. Frunza had an attempt on goal in the 47th, and Valeriu Bordeanu's shot three minutes later went wide.

Rangers relied on counter attacks in the second half, with McCulloch's goal taking the Unirea defense by surprise.
