Uranium mining is central to Niger's economy and the revenues it generates could lift the country out of poverty, but critics say the government is allowing foreign mining companies to plunder the country's natural resources. Areva, a mining multinational based in France, Niger's former colonial ruler, pays less than market price for the uranium it recovers.
